HOW IT BEGAN...

In 1837, Louis Vuitton (16 years old at the time) came to Paris, and began apprenticing for Monsieur Marechal. During this time, baggage was handled roughly due to the main mode of transportation being horse-drawn carriages, boats, and trains. Travelers wished for a craftsman who would be able to create a bag to efficiently pack and protect their belongings.

Louis Vuitton quickly became a valued craftsman at the Parisian atelier of Monsieur Marechal. Louis Vuitton stayed for 17 years before opening his own workshop, which he combined with his families' residence. This is the place where Louis Vuitton began creating handbags and trunks for travelers. In addition, his father, Georges Vuitton, revolutionized luggage locks with an ingenious closing system that turned his travel trunks into real treasure chests
